Admission to Practice
Attorneys admitted to the bar of the District of Kansas (including those admitted pro hac vice and attorneys authorized to represent the United States) are eligible to practice in the U.S. District Court and U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Kansas. Rules governing the admission of attorneys and bar discipline can be found in Part XII of the Rules of Practice and Procedures for District and Bankruptcy Court.

Members who are active and in good standing with the bar(s) of State of Kansas or the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri are eligible for admission to the U.S. District Court of Kansas. Admission requests and fees are processed through PACER using the attorney's individual PACER account.   

Go to PACER to register for a PACER account, request admission to practice, and register for E-Filing privileges

  1. At PACER, hover the mouse over Sign up for an Account.
  2. Click on Attorney Filers.  
  3. Click on Register for a PACER account.
    Follow instructions to Register for PACER Account. After you register for a PACER account, you may request admission to practice, which includes E-Filing privileges.

    You may register for a PACER account and complete an Attorney Admissions request at one time, or you may complete each process at separate times.  However, you must register for a PACER account first. If you would like detailed, step-by-step instructions please contact KSD_Attorney_Registration@ksd.uscourts.gov.
     

  4. If you return later to PACER to complete the request for admission and register for E-Filing privileges:
    Hover the mouse over Manage Your Account.
    Click on Manage My Account Login.
    Follow instructions to complete the admissions and E-Filing registration processes.
  5. Clerk’s office staff review your request for admission and– if the request is complete – send you a payment link via email.
    *The fee for admission to practice in the Kansas federal court is $199.
  6. Once payment is received, clerk’s office staff complete the admission process and send you confirmation of your admission, including your bar number.
    *You will receive a bar card and admission certificate 30-60 days after your application is successfully completed.

Joint Admission Ceremony

Attorneys who pass the State of Kansas bar exam can be admitted to federal court simultaneously with the state at the Joint Admission Ceremony held each April and September in Topeka.
